THE SPACES
or: 15 Years Das KloHäuschen
Das KloHäuschen has been organizing its own Biennial since 2012. And although it has already played a part in major international events (or at least reflected them) and has traveled almost halfway around the world (ok, it was half of Europe – in any case, Munich and its surroundings), we have never really introduced it to the community of independent “art spaces”.
This is about to change.
Because at the same time Das KloHäuschen is turning 15 – it’s high time now!
But what defines these “spaces”?
Hosts for contemporary art. For exhibitions, collaborations, performances, dialogues. For emerging and established artists. For the previously unseen, the unexpected – and sometimes the unforeseen.
These spaces are all quite different: local and international, small and large (and we only visited those up to a certain size). Some are well known – others want to be discovered. Some can be found in the smallest corners – and sometimes only for a limited time.
But they have all in common: They are not driven by commercial goals (and find various ways to keep their spaces open anyway). They all represent for the most part their guests – and not just the art of the founders. And they all are self-organized, decide and act according to their vision – on their own responsibility and at their own risk.
It’s these open spaces of art that we invite to be part of Das KloHäuschen Anniversary Biennial. Primarily spaces from Munich, but also a few spaces from “abroad” (Ebersberg, Dresden, New York, …) that are connected to Das KloHäuschen.
And each Space comes with its own exhibition, each with 7 artists. And all exhibitions will be shown in Das KloHäuschen at the same time.
Over 30 spaces have confirmed their participation, so we are looking forward hosting over 30 exciting exhibitions with a total of more than 200 participating artists.
And Das KloHäuschen itself?
For the occasion of this anniversary, it will transform its own particular architecture into a white cube (as best as it can) and will be proud to host its guests.
